An engaging and powerful short film on hospitality, love, and inclusion.

Randy didn’t look much like a churchgoer. He came to Mass late, dressed in shorts, a tee shirt and flip flops. His long disheveled hair matched the gruffness of his attire. Randy attended a nearby college where he recently experienced a conversion on a retreat. Church was new to him. The packed suburban church was primarily made up of wealthy and conservative parishioners.

Randy waltzed in during the gospel reading. Being tardy, he could not find place to sit. With each step he captured the attention of more of the congregation. People were getting more uncomfortable as he searched each pew seeking a place to sit. With all eyes upon him, Randy walked to the front of the sanctuary and slumped to the ground, taking his seat in the front aisle on the cold tile floor. Every eye was on Randy. Then, from the back, Mr. Ruettiger, a senior usher began making his way toward the front. The gospel reading was just about over, but no one was listening. The only thing anyone could hear was the clicking of Mr. Ruettiger’s wooden cane as he slowly edged towards Randy. Everyone knew what was about to take place. No one could blame Mr. Ruettiger. He was a man in his seventies and couldn’t possibly be expected to understand the dress and behavior of this young college student. Nevertheless, everyone was tense and nervous. The gospel reading ended and everyone remained silent and standing. Necks were craned and bodies shifted in order to get a better view of the coming confrontation…
